What a Self Install Consists Of

The order matters more than any individual step. Every one of these is ordinary homeowner work — hanging something heavy, drilling a clean hole, making an electrical connection — and the step that would normally require a certified technician has already happened at the factory, which is why the refrigerant connection sits last and takes minutes rather than dominating the day.

    Mount the indoor head

    Bracket to studs, level, with clearance above for the return air intake.

    Drill the penetration

    A 3-inch bore, sloped slightly downward to the outside so condensate drains.

    Set the outdoor unit

    Pad or wall bracket, level, on isolation pads to keep vibration out of the structure.

    Route line set and drain

    Wide bends only. A kinked line is replaced, not straightened.

    Make the electrical connection

    Standard outlet on the 115V models; a dedicated circuit on 230V.

    Torque and release the charge

    Thread the couplings, torque to spec, open the valves. Minutes, and it is last.

Time, tools, difficulty, and the mistakes worth knowing about before you drill.

What does a self install actually consist of?

Six steps, in this order: mount the indoor bracket and hang the head, drill a 3-inch routing penetration on a slight downward slope for condensate, set the outdoor unit on a pad or bracket, route the line set and drain, make the electrical connection, then thread and torque the couplings and release the charge. The refrigerant step is deliberately last and takes minutes — almost all of the work is mounting and routing.

How long does it take a first-timer?

A single-zone wall mount runs 4–8 hours for someone who has not done one before. The spread is mostly the wall: an easy exterior wall with the condenser directly outside sits at the low end, while a long routed path, a masonry penetration or an awkward condenser location pushes it to the high end. A second install is meaningfully faster — most repeat installers finish in about four hours.

What tools do I need?

A drill with a 3-inch hole saw, a torque wrench, a level, a stud finder, an adjustable wrench, and a caulk gun. That is the whole list for the mechanical work. You do not need a flaring tool, a manifold gauge set, a nitrogen bottle or a torch — those belong to a conventional install where the refrigerant circuit is opened. A second person is worth more than any tool on the list.

Is this a one-person job?

Mostly, but not entirely. Two steps genuinely want a second pair of hands: lifting the indoor head onto its bracket at height, and moving the outdoor condenser into position — it is the heaviest single component and awkward rather than simply heavy. Everything else is comfortably a solo job. Plan the two lifts for when someone else is around rather than improvising a way to do them alone.

What do first-timers most often get wrong?

Four things, in rough order of frequency. Kinking the line set by bending it too tightly — keep every bend wide, and replace a kinked line rather than straightening it. Drilling the penetration level instead of sloping it slightly downward toward the outside, which backs condensate up into the room. Over-torquing the couplings on the theory that tighter is safer; torque to spec and stop. And mounting the indoor head too close to the ceiling, which starves the return air intake.

How much skill does it really take?

If you have hung a heavy cabinet, run an appliance circuit, or cut a clean penetration through an exterior wall, you have done harder work than any single step here. The honest difficulty is not any one task — it is that the job has a sequence and getting it out of order costs you time. Read the manual end to end before you drill anything; that one habit separates the four-hour installs from the eight-hour ones.

Which systems are realistic to self install?

The wall-mounted systems listed above are the straightforward case, and a single-zone is the sensible first one. Ceiling cassettes and concealed-duct units use the same pre-charged connection, but they add overhead work and ceiling carpentry that change the job — worth doing if you want the look and are comfortable working above your head, but not where to start. Multi-zone installs are not harder per head, just longer: budget 8–14 hours for a dual-zone.
