9,000 BTU Mini Split Systems
9,000 BTU is the right answer for most bedrooms, home offices, and rooms under 350 sq ft. It's the smallest size Zone Air builds, and at this capacity the 115V models plug into a standard outlet — no electrician, no breaker work. For rooms in this range a 12K is actually a downgrade: the larger compressor short-cycles, drops humidity worse, and runs less efficiently than a properly-sized 9K.
- ✓Cools rooms 200–350 sq ft with standard 8 ft ceilings
- ✓115V plug-and-play model — no electrician needed ($1,899)
- ✓230V wall, ceiling cassette, and concealed duct also available
- ✓22–23 SEER2 with inverter compressor
- ✓Heat pump heating to -13°F outdoor, cooling to 122°F outdoor

Why 9,000 BTU Is Often the Right Answer
Most homeowners default to 12,000 BTU as a "safe" size and end up oversizing. A 9,000 BTU mini split is correctly sized for a typical 14×16 bedroom, a 12×18 home office, or a 200–350 sq ft sunroom. At those room sizes a 12K compressor doesn't run long enough to remove humidity properly — it cools the air to setpoint, shuts off, and leaves the room clammy. A 9K runs longer cycles, removes more moisture, and uses less electricity over a season.
If your room is genuinely larger than 350 sq ft (or sun-facing with vaulted ceilings), step up to 12,000 BTU. For rooms under 200 sq ft a mini split is overkill — a window unit or no AC at all is the right call.
115V Plug-and-Play Is the Real Selling Point
Zone Air's 9K 115V wall mount at $1,899 plugs into a standard 15A outlet. That means no electrician visit, no $200–500 breaker install, no permitting friction. For renters, ADUs, garages with limited circuit capacity, or any install where dedicated wiring isn't practical, this is the only configuration that makes financial sense.
The 9K 230V wall mount at $2,099 buys you 24 SEER2 instead of 23 and the option to expand into a multi-zone setup later. If you have a free 230V circuit and you're staying put, the 230V model pays back the upcharge in 4–6 years of utility savings.
Form Factor Choices at 9K
- Wall mount 115V ($1,899) — plug-and-play, fastest install
- Wall mount 230V ($2,099) — higher efficiency, multi-zone capable
- Ceiling cassette ($2,399) — rated 9,500 BTU, recessed in a drop ceiling
- Concealed duct ($2,499) — rated 9,500 BTU, hidden above the ceiling
The cassette and concealed 9K models are rated 9,500 BTU but are the same nominal class.
Operating Cost at 9K
A 9K inverter mini split draws 380–410 watts at full cooling load. At $0.16/kWh that's around $0.06/hour, or $20–35/month for an 8 hr/day cooling season. Heating cost depends on outdoor temperature: COP drops as it gets colder, but a 9K Zone Air maintains 3.81 COP at 47°F outdoor, dropping to 2.1 at 5°F. A 9K is an efficient primary heat source down to about 25°F outdoor; below that it still works but you'll see higher utility bills.
