What the cold-weather ratings mean
Three numbers decide whether a heat pump is genuinely a cold-climate system. Every Zone Air system is rated on all three.

The listings matter as much as the numbers. Energy Star and NEEP are third-party verification that the cold-weather performance was tested rather than advertised, and most state and utility rebate programs check for a NEEP listing before they pay out — the rebate calculator shows what your state offers. Several systems also carry Quebec and Nova Scotia program listings.
Sizing for heat, not for cooling
The square-footage figure on any mini split is a cooling rating. In a cold climate the heating load is usually the larger of the two, so that number overstates what one head will comfortably heat through a northern winter — which is the single most common reason a heat pump “does not work in the cold.” It was sized for July. Run your numbers through the sizing calculator or the Manual J load calculator, and when you land between two capacities, take the larger one.
Two placement details earn their keep in snow country: raise the outdoor unit on a bracket or stand above your usual accumulation so drifts cannot block the coil, and keep it clear of roof runoff that can refreeze around the base. Every system here is a DIY mini split on pre-charged line sets, so there is no vacuum pump or EPA license involved in getting one running before winter.
Cold climate mini split FAQ
Do mini splits work in cold weather?
Yes. A modern inverter heat pump does not stop producing heat when the temperature drops below freezing — Zone Air systems are rated to keep heating down to -13°F outdoor temperature. What changes is capacity: every air-source heat pump produces less heat as it gets colder, because there is less heat in the outside air to move. That is why cold-climate sizing works off the heating load at your design temperature rather than off the cooling number on the box. The systems that struggle in winter are almost always undersized for the heating load, not defective.
Do heat pumps work in freezing temperatures, or do I need backup heat?
They work well below freezing. At 5°F, a Zone Air 12,000 BTU system still returns a COP2 of 2.1, meaning it delivers 2.1 units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws — an electric resistance heater delivers 1.0 at any temperature. Whether you want backup heat depends on how far below the rated -13°F floor your climate goes and how much risk you want to carry. In much of the US a properly sized cold-climate mini split is the only heat a room needs; in the far north, people commonly keep an existing furnace or baseboard as backup for the handful of coldest nights.
How cold can a Zone Air mini split heat?
Down to -13°F outdoor temperature, with an operating range of -13°F to 86°F in heating mode. That figure is the point at which the manufacturer stops rating heat output, not the point where the unit shuts off in a snowstorm. Cooling operates from 5°F to 131°F.
What is HSPF2, and what number should I look for in a cold climate?
HSPF2 is the heating-season efficiency rating — total heat delivered divided by total electricity used across a season. Higher is better. Ratings are published per climate region, and the Region IV number is the cold-climate one, which is why it is the figure shown on each system above. Zone Air systems run from 10.0 to 10.5 HSPF2 in Region IV. For reference, a new heat pump has to hit 7.5 HSPF2 to be sold at all, so anything in the 10s is a strong cold-climate rating.
What does NEEP listed mean?
NEEP is the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships cold-climate air-source heat pump list — an independent registry of systems that meet a defined bar for low-temperature heating performance. It matters for two reasons: it is third-party verification that the cold-weather claims were tested rather than marketed, and many state, provincial, and utility rebate programs require a NEEP listing to qualify. Zone Air systems carry Energy Star and NEEP listings, and several are additionally listed for the Quebec and Nova Scotia programs.
Why does my heat pump blow cold air sometimes in winter?
That is the defrost cycle, and it is normal. In cold, damp weather frost forms on the outdoor coil, which blocks the airflow the system needs to pull heat from. Periodically the unit reverses briefly to melt that frost off, and during those few minutes the indoor head stops delivering warm air. You may also see steam rising off the outdoor unit afterward. A defrost cycle lasting a few minutes every so often is the system working correctly; constant defrosting is not, and usually points to airflow blockage or a low charge.
Should I size a cold climate mini split differently?
Yes, and this is where most cold-climate installs go wrong. In a hot climate you size on the cooling load; in a cold climate the heating load governs, and it is usually the larger of the two. Practically, that means the square-footage figure on a product page — which is a cooling rating — overstates what one head will comfortably heat in a northern winter. Size off your design temperature with the sizing calculator, and if you land between two capacities in a cold climate, take the larger one.
Does the outdoor unit need to be raised off the ground for snow?
Yes, anywhere with meaningful snowfall. Mount the condenser on a bracket or stand that puts it above your typical accumulation depth, so drifting snow cannot block the coil or bury the base, and so meltwater from the defrost cycle can drain away instead of refreezing under the unit. Keep the space around it clear through the winter as well — an outdoor unit packed in snow loses the airflow it needs to make heat.
